Scottoiler Active Fluid System

Extensive research has shown that water is almost as efficient as oil as a lubricant. The Active Fluid System is based around Scottoiler's Active Fluid (an emulsion of water and oil which gives the best of both worlds). The fluid is less viscous than standard lubes making it ideal for flushing the chain clean whilst also leaving a film of oil both inside and on the surface of the chain.

Active fluid contains corrosion inhibitors and is also biodegradable.

The Facts

Scottoiler Active Fluid System dramatically improves the service-life, efficiency and cleanliness of bicycle transmissions.

Derailleur gear transmission efficiency can be as high as 98% BUT only when the chain and sprockets are new and perfectly oiled.

A dry chain is up to 13% less efficient than a wet chain.

Adding wet lube to a chain without first thoroughly cleaning it will only create and add to a grinding paste.

Cleaning the chain is as important as lubricating it, in maximising the efficiency and service life of your chain.

Oil is only 1% more efficient than water as a lubricant.

How does it work?

The system is very simple in principal, squeeze the 'Squid' and it deflates, sending 1.5ml of Active Fluid from the 'Squid' to the jockey wheel.

As the jockey wheel rotates it centrifuges the Active Fluid out onto the chain, the jockey wheel injector helps to flush dirt and grit deposits from inside the chain.

The water content in the Active Fluid evaporates leaving a protective film on the chain.

As the Squid re-inflates it draws up a further 1.5ml from the reservoir, ready for the next application.

The Cycle Oiler makes chain lubrication so simple, prolonging the life of the drive train by up to seven times.

If you typically clean & lube the transmission after each ride you can increase the life of the transmission by up to 2 times and if you are in the habit of adding oil without first cleaning the transmission then an increased life of up to 7 times can be expected through using the AFS.

What's in the kit?

Everything... The kit is very comprehensive and contains everything you will require for the install on the majority of bikes.

There are 3 parts to the Scottoiler Active Fluid System Solution:

1) Reservoir

35ml capacity ultrasonically welded ABS plastic base and Acrylic lid. Can be frame or seatpost mounted, self-adhesive backed with 2 rubber O-rings to secure.

2) 'Squid' Pump

Silicon Rubber moulding, so called as it squirts fluid out when squeezed, not unlike a squid swimming. Generally frame mounted but can also be stem or bar mounted.

3) Dispenser

A replacement Tension (lower) Jockey Wheel & Bush.

There are 4 jockey wheels to choose from and a handy guide to instruct you which one to use.

There is also a 125ml bottle of Active Fluid in the kit, enough to provide 80 applications (i.e. fill the reservoir 3.5 times).

A bottle of cleaning fluid is also included, you should run this through the AFS when you have fitted it to remove any grease or oil in the chain.

When to use it?

As mentioned, the Active Fluid is water based, as such it is water-soluble and will rinse off in heavy rain or when the bike is washed, hence the system is on- board, ready for the next application where & when you need it.

The Squid should only be pressed when the cranks are turning to avoid any waste and mess.

If it is raining do not use the oiler excessively, water itself is a good enough lubricant and is actually only 1% less efficient as a lube than oils. However, water has no corrosion inhibiting properties so if used alone will result in corrosion.

So do not waste the fluid when it is raining, wait until it dries up and then re- apply to prevent corrosion. Or, apply between downpours.

After washing the bike, re-apply once to ensure that the transmission is protected while the bike is in storage.

On a dry day the oiler only needs to be used in dusty / gritty conditions, flushing the dust / grit from the chain to prevent grinding paste forming. The chain is protected from corrosion by the film remaining from the last application. If the transmission sounds noisy re-apply to minimise wear, as it is running dry.

During Winter the chain may become sticky due to the presence of road salt. Basically the Active Fluid reacts with salt to create an insoluble barrier between the salt and the metal protecting the transmission from corrosion.

Should this occur the chain will not rinse clean with water alone, making you aware that there is salt present and that the transmission is due a thorough wash.
